Gas proving systems for commercial kitchens G621 Safestart KS22 Control Panel FP45D Current Monitor ADP10 Air Pressure Switch

Duomo's Safestart is a very simple system for checking that all manually operated gas taps are closed in rooms such as commercial catering establishments or science laboratories.

The G621 Gas Valve Assembly (A) has proven popular as it is delivered as a pre-assembled, painted and pre-wired unit eliminating the need for on site assembly. It is available with either BSP union end or compression fittings (1/2" to 2") or flanged (2 1/2" to 4").

The KS22 Trio Safestart (B) is used in hotel kitchens, restaurants, schools, hospitals, prisons etc. Its ventilation proving system - Current Monitors (C) or Air Pressure Switches (D) - checks that all extraction and supply fans are on before the gas proving sequence starts.

The function of the Safestart system is to ensure that all downstream gas taps are turned off prior to reinstating the gas supply to appliances or Bunsen burners. Duomo's Safestart is designed according to IGE/UP/2 Edition 2 - July 2008. In Appendix 7 'WEEP BY-PASS PRESSURE PROVING SYSTEMS' the British Standard states that:

IGE/UP/2 Edition 2 - July 2008

'Weep by-pass pressurisation systems are widely used to prove that the downstream control and pipework system is either gas tight or in the closed position. The system may be employed on manually controlled, high temperature, multi-burner plant prior to ignition of the burners for which IGE/UP/12 applies or in a pipework system supplying several appliances some of which may not be protected by flame safeguards, for example in catering establishments or laboratories. Many systems also provide protection against inlet gas supply pressure failure.

'Systems that do not use a controlled by-pass are not considered to comply with this Appendix as the control of entry/leakage of gas into downstream plant may not be sufficient to ensure safety. The use of systems relying on the opening of a large SSOV to pressurise the downstream system may lead to excessive release of gas.'

Duomo (UK) Ltd have always manufactured gas proving systems in accordance with this new standard.

When sourcing Duomo products for a commercial kitchen installation it is important to know what you need, and why. There are two typical scenarios to consider;

  • When any appliance in the kitchen does not have flame failure safety devices attached
  • When every appliance in the kitchen does have flame failure safety devices attached

The graphic here provides a visual explanation of these two scenarios and illustrates what kit would typically be installed.
